Sorcerers apprentice

Sir, my need is sore.

Spirits that I've cited

.... that is how the London Stock Exchange must feel after they were crippled by a system outage for seven (7) hours! See here

Maybe they should have moved to the mainframe in 2005 instead of building on the Microsoft .NET Framework.

Let us be fair: was the outage due to the framework, or to poor applications and/or infrastructure built on top of the framework?

It's perfectly possible to create a 7 hour outage with a lousy IMS/DC application after all.

I believe in the z/platforms in a big way, but I don't think we gain anything if we're not accurate in our assessments of all platforms strengths and weaknesses.

Too many of our "mainframe is better" articles end up sounding like the buggy-whip manufacturers complaints about horseless carriages, and that's not what we want or need.
